    (977 items)

This is a simply constructed WW1 submarine. Each end is made of a bullet and casing. The center has a section of shell brass crimped around it to give it shape and body. The conning tower is made from a cut rifle casing. Overall the model is 6" long and a little over 1" tall.

I am not sure what submarine this is meant to represent or even it is supposed to represent a particular model.

See my other postings for numerous other pieces of Great War Trench Art.

    Thanks for looking,

    Scott

scott-sorry to inform you but both your submarine trench items are fake. many interesting trench items on ebay are recently made.
    13. scottvez scottvez, 13 years ago
I agree, there are many bogus trench art items on ebay.

Not sure what that has to do with this piece-- not an ebay purchase nor was the other.

What makes you think it is fake?

Scott, sounds like someone is trying to stir the pile. No problem with your postings, just play time for someone. Well that's what I think. Thanks for sharing your treasures and I'll be watching for more. Kerry

Thanks kerry. I appreciate your input.

I have collected for many years and have a very good grasp of the fakes/ modern.

Your welcome Scott, I find some people are not happy, unless they stir-up stuff. LOL. I know the feeling on collecting a certain type of thing and then somebody tells me what I have or should say Don't have. :-)

Thanks-- I don't mind listening as long as some facts are provided or if the person has some credibility in the area.

A collector of "pre 1950s plastic lighters and WW2 trench style lighters" doesn't carry much credibility when talking about items other than lighters.

      Thanks again, kerry!

I'm amazed at these items--so resourceful
    27. scottvez scottvez, 10 years ago
      Thanks again jewels.

While the name "Trench Art" has its origins in the trenches of WW1, the art form encompasses all decorative and utilitarian items made from War refuse.

The media (bullets, shell casings, helmets), maker (soldier, civilian), where made (trench, hospital, factory, etc...) and era (SAW, WW1, Iraqi Freedom) are helpful in catagorizing trench art.

    28. Jewels Jewels, 10 years ago
Ahh okay thanks scott! Very interesting! I imagine the WW1 trench art is most valuable and sought after?
    29. scottvez scottvez, 10 years ago
SOME collectors use era to define their collections.

For me it is more about QUALITY. Here is a group of three shells, the "bark shell" (WW1) and acid etched (WW2) both exhibit FINE workmanship of the type that I collect:

      http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/83061-trench-art-through-the-years-artillery

Here are three canteens (SAW, WW1, WW2):

      http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/82781-trench-art-canteens-through-the-years

The Spanish American War canteen is the most unusual/ valuable in the lot.

For about the last 15 years, trench art planes and miniatures have been my focus. Here is a grouping of three Pacific Theater P-38s:

      http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/48921-trio-of-p-38-trench-art-ashtrays

The P-38 is the most typically encountered plane, but it is eagerly sought by collectors and commands a high price.

Finally, if you'd like to learn more-- here is the "bible" on trench art:

      http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/82033-trench-art-an-illustrated-history-by-j

It is a great work and available in most libraries.
