I found this chair driving past a garage sale at 50 mph. It caught my eye, so I turned around quickly and pulled over to check it out. The people there were packing up to go home. They sold me the chair for $5. The woman told me that her father found it at the New Egypt Auction, in New Jersey in the 1950's or 1960's.

I am interested if anyone can give me any information about the chair. The closeup pictures show hand carvings along the bottom middle stretcher, the type of wood used across the top back, and mortise and tenon joints on the bottom side stretcher. The entire chair is joined by hard carved joints such as these. The chair is very interesting, but cannot be sat in, it is very wobbly and basically held together by the rush seat (I am not sure if it is original). I have idea what type of wood was used to make the chair.

I would appreciate any help, thanks!

We picked one up at the Columbus Sale farmers market around the same time. We once lived in Pemberton. There is a guy who used to live in Burlington who is a chair restoration genius. I believe he lives down on long beach island now since he retired. He is older than dirt but knows chairs. His name is Bill Giberson. If you could contact him he could probably talk your ear off about the chair.

Thanks! The chair you picked up, did it look the same as this?

It was similar but this one looks modified. Any pictures of the back side of the top back rest?

No. Not that I am able to make out at least. Do u have any history about either of the chairs. Did urs have pyramid like carvings across the bottom stretcher?

The style is known as a Marlborough chair. The design is very old, but this chair is 1920's
