can you help identify this Heavy amethyst glass ?ashtray. on the bottom it says patent applied for no 235. it looks like a ashtray but i looked and cant find another.

I believe it's an inkwell. The "blocks" in the well are likely to removed excess ink from the nib of a straight pen. The "channel" across the front if where you lay your pen when not in use.
Yes, Knifeguy is right this is a inkwell. Your patent number is missing some numbers. 235 would put this in the 1830's and this probably dates to the early 1900's.

I looked up your patent number on the USPO website. The patent number 235 on your inkwell shows it was patented on June 14, 1837.
