I believe this called a Boudoir bed doll.
Very art deco 20's era. I'm wondering if she is a Anita doll because I found one with good paint and hair that looked like a match.
The crazy "Jester" pattern for the body is throwing me off.
There are 4 or 5 tiny tiny nails.
One on each temple
One at base of neck in front
One at top of head
Very few single blond hairs.
The nails must have held a hat/hair and
Something went around the neck (can this be a Marionette
All soft material for stuffing
My dog growls at it everytime she sees it I purchased at a Thrift Shop

Your doll is a Boudoir bed doll and yes sometimes used as Marionettes, He may have had on a Jesters hat also . I have seen them with printed bodies and usually was because how they were dressed the body became part of costume . Looks like a Jester man to me . Your right made about 1920 made of composition heads these heads did not fair well for some reason . They must have made the composition thinner or something as so many Boudoir dolls have much cracking painting chipping like yours . He could be restored but not sure the price you would pay to restore would bring enough increase in value to warrent it , unless you know how to do it :-) Thanks for sharing him/her on CW !
It seems to me that he was probably once loved or valued in some way, or he wouldn't be here now, nearly a century later. I find him charming, and stable. Glad you found him.
