This book was another gift was a wonderful musician named Raleigh Powell, of Virginia, I believe. He was a great music historian and loved the music of Louisiana, so when I moved to New Orleans, and was doing a lot of singing, he had his dear friend Ann Savoy(the author), send me her book, with a big invite to come and meet her in Eunice, LA.. I will always kick myself that I never went to meet her and listen to her and her husband play the ancient songs of Ireland, the Caribbean, the Bayou and the Mardi Gras Indians,... incredible people. The book is filled with sheet music to the old music, and is like an encyclopedia of what is normally an oral tradition. Ann Savoy worked very hard transposing all these "Unwritten" songs into sheet music for the music lovers and music historians to better grasp. She also tells all the stories, incredible stories of the bayou. So, the book is no signed, but it has a sheet that says this is "a gift from Raleigh Powell, Best Wishes, Ann Savoy", on her Bluebird Stationary, and that is as close as I came to meeting Ann Savoy, doh, another kick in me arse, wish I had driven in those days!! Mich P.S. The last photo is the back of the book and is a great old photo slightly damaged, it makes the book look damaged, but in fact, it is in perfect shape, amazing after all the travels she's had...
Great book!! Love it.
Thank you pack-rat. If you are a musician or a lover of Cajun country, I highly suggest this book. The oral stories transcribed by Ms. Savoy, with the old photos and sheet music...it might be one of the greatest books ever written about the Cajun Acadian French speaking part of America, and the travels all the way back to immigration, from French heretic Huguenot to Canada to Louisiana!!
