Today I would like to share another find from last weekend. This is a late1800's wooden nail box from the Putnum Nail Company of Neponset, Mass.
Here is a little background information:
“The Putnum Nail Company began the manufacture of certain fixtures, horseshoe nails and other types of hardware at Neponset, Mass. in 1859. In 1860 thirty-three tons of horseshoe nails were manufactured during the entire year. In 1891 nearly ten tons per day were produced by over 400 employees."
“Putnum's Horse Shoe Nails were adopted for general use by the U.S. Army as the “Government Standard Nail”. In 1872, Mr. Putnum's factory in Neponset used a 200 horsepower Corless engine to drive his machinery, and it employed over 200 employees in making nails. The company used only machines of Mr. Putnam's invention, the first of which was put into operation in 1859.”
“ The company lasted into the beginning of the 20th century, but the 1910 Bromley atlas shows the business at the site to be the Magnesia Co. of Massachusetts. The 1918 Bromley atlas shows the Geo. Lawley Shipyard.”
This nice little box measures 14 x 8 x 6, with good graphics.
    enjoy

Thank you very much BELLIN68, walksoftly, ttomtucker & pickingupbones for the love and visiting.
I really enjoy them also. There is a story behind this one. I was in line to check out at the estate sale and the lady in front of me had this box. It was full of knitting items and was priced at $29.00.
She said to her husband "I just want what is in the box, not the box itself." I said "I'll buy the box." She said "give me $4.00 and it is yours." Money well spent, end of story.
