My old, trencher style dough bowl. Hand hewn. This is one of the big ones. The person I bought this from didn't know anything about it, but it looks like the French style.

Wow that is a big one, never seen anything like it.

I've never seen a big one like this in person but did see them online. I actually wanted a smaller one to just put on the counter but haven't seen any around here. The lady gave me a good deal on this one so I couldn't pass it up. There's no room on the counter top for it though!

That is gorgeous... looks like a twin to the one I bought at Lake Martin. For five years, I had search for just the right Dough Bowl. They were either cracked or too expensive. This one was represented to be 200 year old. I must say that seeing it in an outside setting, my perspective must have been off because it is really big sitting on the counter! Approx 20 wide, 9 inches tall and a whopping 46 inches long!
Do you know anything about your bowl's history?

Unfortunately, no. The person I bought it from didn't know anything about it either. This one does have a crack in it, but it's a tight crack and not wide open. Something about that just doesn't sound right. :)
This one measures 16 inches across, 47 inches long, and is about 7 inches deep. I was talking to someone about it, and they said the ones this size normally had 3 women working it at the same time. He said there would be 2 women on the same side, working the ends and then another woman on the other side in the middle, rocking it back and forth and they were making the dough. I don't know if that's correct or not but it seems logical looking at the size and shape of it.

That makes sense. My friends are all "oo-ing" and "ah-ing" over my bowl. Told them that I found a twin online. They want to know how to contact you to see if you are interested in selling yours.

No, not interested in selling it. Like you, I'd been searching for several years for one and just found this one last summer. I've seen some at local auctions (smaller ones), but they always go for a ridiculous amount. I saw a smaller one at the flea market a few weeks ago, and the guy wanted $200 for it! Mine is currently sitting on an old, Bentwood chair near our front door. I just don't have any place else to put it right now because of its size. It actually doesn't look too bad though sitting on that chair. Maybe that'll be its place.

Are you going to upload a picture of yours?
    8. SouthernDog, 13 years ago
I need to learn how to do that. Hey, I'm sorry that I passed along my friends' question... I just saw where that is a no-no. Looking into uploading a picture.
