What I wouldn't give for that sign! That's my family and me near the East German border in 1988. Little did we know what would happen the following year. If we would've known, that sign might have mysteriously ended up in the trunk of my car that day, assuming I wouldn't have gotten shot at. :)

I was on the other side of that sign until 1985. I would have given everything to be on your side!

freiheit, where were you? My wife is from Xanten, but she still had a lot of family in the East, mostly around Leipzig.

I am from Annaberg, a small city between Leipzig and Dresden. I studied in Potzdam (close to Berlin). I have great memories but also many nightmares from that time:) Say "Hello" to your wife!
      Good night!

My wife's father is buried in the East. He had an "accident" on the way back from East Germany. The first time she was ever able to visit his grave was after the Wall came down. No one in the family still knows that whole truth about the accident.

I am sorry to hear about your wife's dad. Truth was a commodity in the East that was impossible to obtain. Have you ever tried to gain access to his Stazi files? One thing I know is that they kept meticulous record of everything. Of course, back then, nobody had the opportunity to get a look.

No, she hasn't tried that. She's not sure she wants to.

I feel the same. I don't want to know who stabbed me in the back and ratted on me. It's easier not to know. What I do know, though, is that one of my close friends was an informer. After the wall came down, she disappeared for many years. I am better off not knowing what was going on. I don't talk to her now; it's better that way.

My wife always knew she had a half sister in the East and finally found her on Facebook. The half sister gave her a totally different story about what happened to her dad than what the family in the West had always heard. It's hard on her because she doesn't know what to believe.

That's so sad. I hope one day she will find out what really happened.

Thank you, I hope so too. The only similarity in the two stories is that they both involved the Stasi.

Thanks, Aimathena. That little boy I'm holding turned 27 this year. Where's the time go?!
