Very pretty thing I hope it brings you years of joy.
Probably will be passed onto my niece since I don't have any daughters. It's one of those things I found at an auction and was just way to cool to pass up. Unfortunately I know little more then what can be googled on it. I don't know if it has an original clasp or lock for securing the doors or not. Curios as to what year it is. Do you know anything about this jewelry box?
From this Auction site : http://www.eliteauction.com/catalogues/031712/category_catalogue.php?id=12
They say" Vintage Chinese wooden jewelry box having four Chinese jade reticulated plaques. Has metal plaque to back stating Shanghai. Mid to early 20th century. Measures 10" height x 6" width x 4 3/4" width (25.4cm x 15.2cm x 12cm). Total weight of 1481 grams.
Pre-Sale estimate $200-$300."
I got the above using your Heading in Google.
Thanks. That's the one I have. they are not worth that much but the detail on them is awesome and the jade makes it even more interesting. Must have missed the period so thanks for posting.
The one on the link does not show any kinda clasp or locking mechanism so they must not have come with one.
I was able to make a key for the Chinese Lock I had and it attaches to this jewlery box Beautifully.
I have the same one that I inherited from my aunt. In fact, my mother bought a modern one 10 years ago in a sell out. You could still buy them new then, but the difference with the one I got from my aunt was spectacular. Much more detail on the old one and you could almost feel the quality. As for the one my mother bought: cheaply done and mass produced. The lock is copper or brass with carved details and it works with some sort of pushing mechanism. I'll try to find a picture of it some time soon.
