This was purchased from a veterans estate in South Carolina about 15 years ago.
The shell has been handlettered in a professional manner to commemorate the end of WW2:
"The dawn of Peace was announced, at our, Most advanced Air Base, IE SHIMA, By the firing of this shell at reveille, V.J. Day (3 SEPT. 1945) By the, 337th Air Service Group"
Ie Shima was also the site of the plane transfers for the Japanese Peace Delegation that ended the war.
Thanks for looking.

scott-an interesting item. it is not however made into anything. it is just an old shell marked with inscription. there is no craftsmanship or design whatsoever. to me-trench art means someone [basis of our disagreement] took used wartime material and made it into something else. this is just an example of a wartime spent shell but not trench art. there is no "art" in this item at all.
please check ebay item -# 260994797759 . i suggest you place a bid because it is a complete fabrication. a totally bogus tank but i'm sure it would look great on your shelf. they make it look authentic by placing a 1917 uk penny on top. figural tanks are a frequent theme for fake trench art but i'm sure you'll appreciate it.
I would consider the painting to be artwork.
This does show that soldiers worked on shells!

Your word vs. DOCUMENTATION-- I will go with the documentation.
I suggest that you stick with lighters and not expand your generalizations to other areas of trench art.
Most of your genralizations are refuted through primary source materials and photographs in "Trench Art an Illustrated History" by Kimball. You would be well served to READ it. You will find photographs of soldiers making trench art, WW1 and WW2 period articles about soldiers making trench art, and primary source material (letters, diaries) that mentions soldiers making trench art.
I entered into this discussion despite your rude initial postings, thinking you had something to share. Instead, unable to provide anything other than your word, and apparently frustrated by those of us who choose to rely on DOCUMENTED FACTS, you have once again shown your true colors with snide and negative comments.

scott- i do not see any painting design on the shell. anyway - if you do not prefer lighters then place a bid on item-# 190661861988. this item is as fake a trench art airplane that i've seen in 30 years. i am sure it will look good alongside your other fakes.
Your childish behavior really doesn't help your argument!
Scott
Can we make him stand in a corner?
I don't know that it would help.
I thought that I was reasonable in giving him the opportunity to make the case. It seems to come down to "I know more than collectors and dealers and all of the period documentation is wrong"!
I would like to see your desk item mentioned-- watch out, it may be FAKE too!
Scott
Thanks petey and tlmbaran.

I think we should refer to him as the One Who Doesn't Play Well With Others! (OWDPWWO)
Your right his behaviour is uncalled for, I'm sorry he is taking it out on you & your items.
He dosn't even like or love his own 2 postings, much less anyone elses. Jealous?
Thanks walksoftly. He may know "trench lighters", but his generalized statements on trench art show he has very limited knowledge on trench art.
His assertions are quickly disproved through the mountains of contrary evidence available online and in book form.
Anyone with an interest in Trench art should read "Trench Art, An Illustrated History", by Jane Kimball. The book is well researched with numerous citations from soldier letters and diaries as well as period magazines and newspapers. The book is well photographed with hundreds of examples of trench art from many eras and many photographs of soldiers creating these objects.
Do your own research and draw your own conclusions.

Scott, I hope he doesn't find my 45 handles, and say they're fake too, lol. If so I'll have to post the "postmaked" box, pistol parts and the letter home with it. LOL. Good Luck with your "admirer"
