Hi, So glad to find your sight. Look what I found in the trash on trash day here in the sate of Michigan. This trunk is all tin or some sort of metal. Ornately stamped all the way around. Stands 32' tall by 36' long and 21' deep. The hardware is like the Cross of the Crusade?..Two of the crosses are stamped on back pat.mar.and the date is hard to read looks like 1850/1830. Can you tell us. what This is...Can it be lightly cleaned and what the valvue could be if any. She is so beautiful....Love your sight and can't wait to hear back from you.......Thanx....Marian and Dakota and Ashley....(aka) Trash Days......gotta love them

Looks like a lovely domed top tin covered trunk from about 1890's. I would think that the patent date may say 1880, however even if earlier the patent on the locks only gives it its earliest possible date -- the patents were used for many years after. I give it that era by the style, material and hardware that is on it -- others on this forum may have a different take. The interesting part of yours is the handles that are tin covered with a different motif -- star pressed tin -- a nice little innovation. There is a way to make the tin shinny again but you have to take a risk with a drill and a wire brush attachment -- look under dome top trunk on my site -- it is how I restored the tin, however I recommend simply giving it good cleaning. The picture quality makes it hard to determine value, and its not something we do much on this forum -- take a look on your local classifieds and you will find a similar example for pricing. There is nothing better than the thrill of finding a beautiful trunk such as yours on the curb. Way to go Marian Dakota and Ashley!

Very nice find! Here's a link to a fantastic trunk website. Be sure and check it out. I'll answer a lot of your question... Thanks for sharing! By the way, if you're thinking this is Mike Wolfe's personal site... it's not. What you've found is a site called Collectors Weekly and this is the "Show and Tell" section. It's a wonderful site populated pretty much entirely by collectors who want to share their knowledge and oh and ah at other collector's stuff! Welcome!! Here's that link...

I found an easier way to make the tin shiny and pretty again and requires no danger to the item itself! I used wd 40 on mine with bar keepers friend and a bit of steel wool.
