The cigarette bur gives a bit of a hint. The box was probably meant for cigars. If there was a seam cut into the wood for a divider I'd have thought cigarettes. But the metal looks like pewter or perhaps zinc.

Typical white metal molded dragon box, made in Japan for export, mid 20th century. This wood lined piece would be for storing tobacco. Too bad the hinges broke, this metal is usually soft and fragile. Thanks for posting.

Rene, you are just a trouble maker, and sound like a broken record..... I have much more experience in the Far East field, especially in the category of large exports to the USA as decorative items.

It is a totally environment than yours was, working with European auctions, and dealing with things you may never have seen or handled before, I own a box like this, and have sold some boxes like these.

Why you feel the need the for this continued approach against me is redundant, you are qualified in areas I am not, I am in others that you are not. I have never claiming any expertise in the Kanji language, only that I was familiar with the marks, and what they often meant because I have learned this over time.

I think the two characters might be “long life” ? (shou) and “good fortune” (fu). A great present for anyone celebrating their birthday.

I hope you are both joking or perhaps secret lovers and neither of you know ?

Rene, I was hoping we could co-exist without hostile remarks here on CW. That is what a site like this is about, everybody has something important to share, you certainly do, I am not insensitive to your health problems, have my own. Peace.
