I picked this clock up in southern Indiana last week, it came from the same pick as the Moser vases. Very nice clock that seems to work perfectly and looks to be all original. I'm not really a clock person, but I may keep this one. The figure seems to be of a woman or a man scholar and they are holding a globe that reads Afriqu and Asie (maybe French spelling), I also like the ink well beside him. If any clock guys out there can give more info that would be great. Thanks

Hi, you have an Ansonia "Newton" Figural Mantel Clock circa 1894. It's highly collectible. Ansonia statuettes are mostly made from plated spelter (zinc alloy) so be very careful with it. It's not a particularly strong metal so consider it fragile and clean it with non abrasive, mild soaps only...Dawn is good.

They are beautiful clocks and you'll be able to find a lot more information online using the "Ansonia Newton" keywords.

      Enjoy.

BTW, my "circa" dating is based upon a reference that used old Ansonia catalogs to get "approximate" dates of manufacture. If your date is from a movement patent number, that's a good starting point, but Ansonia used various movements in a wide variety of cases so you know it wasn't made before the patent date of course, but the model may have appeared long after the patent was granted.
      Regards,
      Bruce

Thank you Bruce99 for the information, that's good news. It does have a loose piece of metal about size of a quater in the back, really have to look to notice it though. I'm sure a lot of these clocks were damaged and probably did not survive.

You're very welcome Chevy59! Your clock's open escapement dial looks like it is in very good condition and the spelter finish looks original. A lot of these clocks get painted or refinished. Zinc is very reactive and a lot of these pieces get really screwed up by people who don't know what they are working with. This looks like a very nice example! Thanks for sharing it with us.
