Ok oilman, answer me this there are four Conoco pump plates in pict.# 4(the backsides. The 2 (dark) backed signs are: the newest Conoco green pump sign & the one from our bulk plant. . The two grey backed are 2 that ive picked up resently, there both "Royal" signs. Now, the "black" Royal sign came with the bulk plant(which built in the 1920s had changed brands several times before we bought it in 1965-6 .The sign was found in the building a few yrs. later. as far as i know they wernt re-popin signs then, in fact, you couldnt give them away, except to patch a shed roof leak!! So, ill go to the grave on that sign.... The "green" sign i just bought "physically" matches that sign. the two newer Royal (gray backed) signs dont. Pict.s #1,2 show u the differences, the black is almost 1/8" taller overall, the "bar" on the two grey signs dimentions are: 2 3/8" T x 9" W . font hight is 1 3/8". The black "bar" is 2 1/8" T X 9 1/2" W, font hight is 1 7/16". And in Pict#3 (its harder to tell in the pict.) but, theres quite a bit of difference in the reds. Both have heavy enamel and all LOOK right, if anything the "originals" look more suspect. in the Conoco collectors bible, they break the pump plates down into 5 different "varieties"-- type 1: the 8"W Conoco sign used for both gaspumps & oil racks. type 2: -- "green" Conoco, used for pumps only. type 3:-- red & wht. "Royal" same size as #2. type 4:--red &wht. "super" same use & size as #s 2,3. type 5:-- is the black & wht. "diesel", same use & size as #2,3,&4. Here comes the confusing part (to me!) ,the book says, & i quote"the #2 sign is slightly larger than the above sign (the #1 sign) slightly less than 9" wide! niether of my two styles of signs are less than 9" wide, the gray exactly 9" ,black 9.5". Now my facts about the "original" sign are FACTS!! . Did my dad, knowing i was gaing into this insanely complex (with alot of deciet & trechery) , buy a Delorian, install a flux-capacitor, buy a re=pop, go back to say, 1970, and put it where i would find it. Just because i used to complain about having to wash every winshield that pulled up to the D-X gas station?????????
thanks bratdd & mfg75
The back tells all the story. As you said the conoco that came from the bulk plant is real. The one with the gray back is a repop.
once again oilman, thanks for your help. The only thing still buggin me is that one sentance from the book, the one that said " the type 2 signs are a little smaller than the type 1 signs with a width off a little UNDER 9".Ive measured BOTH signs over & over, and the re-pops still measure out at 9" , originals at 9.5". Could be a typo. , hea, you dont think he took the Delorian out for a second spin do you!!
thanks official fuel. what do u think about this?
