This is my favourite piece of pottery....ever! it is by Hatton Beck who actually has a connection to my Boyd plates posted earlier, he was the husband of Lucy Boyd whom he married in 1939. Lucy Boyd was the daughter of Merric Boyd, who was a very talented and highly collected potter.

This jug is signed (scribed) H. H. Beck and dated... 1948.

It is very heavy weighing...6lb 4 ounces (just under 3 kilos) and is in perfect condition'. I have found it quite hard to get the true colour, but this the best I could do, it is more a dark claret.

    Thank you for looking.

It really is a beauty inky! A real gem!
Do you have a copy of Australian Art Pottery 1900-1950?
There are no pieces by him in the book but there is reference him. In the 1940's he had been working in an old butcher's shop in Neerim Road Murrembeena. It was in this same premises that Arthur Boyd and Peter Herbst established AMB Pottery. Merric Boyd had given his son some of his equipment to get the venture started there . It seems that also Beck designed an electric kiln that Carl Cooper had bought. Coper is another of those that interpreted Aboriginal motifs. He also worked with Frederick Cox (Joliff) in the 1940's. This jug bears similarities to not only Merric Boyd's but Cox's work too. There is an amzin jug with apples on page 20 of the OZ Pot Book (cf above) Hatton was a teacher at the Central Technical College in Brisbane and one of his students was Ida Martin
FYI have a look at this site on Remued Pottery:

I especially like the work of Allan James. I had a few of his large gumnut jugs. Long gone now!

What an amazing site. I have two of Remued's jugs, I have just found one...(Early Series) Jug With high lip No: 119/8 second one in, slightly differnt colours. This site is going to keep me busy for days, aren't they just stunning? Thank you so much for this! No unfortunately! I don't have the book you mention. Sounds like you have had an amazing collection of all sorts. It's hard to find Australian pottery like this here, the odd Martin, Guy Boyd stuff comes up now and again, it's always a fight and I normally bow out, but I get lucky sometimes so can't complain.

Thank you once again, I'm enjoying sharing my 'stuff' on C.W. and will slowly post some more of it.
