This is a so-called Blackamoor stick pin or hat pin. Gold or silver (it's so tiny I can't make out even the color, but it has a gold color even after polishing) enamelled with a Ruby or Garnet. The head is of onyx or black chalcedony with coral on the head. I would really like to get your opinion on this. There are two obties as far as I am concerned.
The first is that this is a French gold enamelled Blackamoor dated c 1870. The second option is dated mid 1930. How can I date and know what material the head itself was made of. It's all so tiny. Please your opinion !

Hello bratjdd, Thanks for your quick reply. The pin itself is 6.5 cm(2.5"). The whole Blackamoor pin is 8.7 cm (3.5").

Thanks Kevin, again you are right it must indeed be a stick pin. But please could you also explain what is crimping?
    3. Agram.m Agram.m, 13 years ago
Hi Kevin, In general I understand English well and after you explanation my first idea was right. This stick pin, the watch fob and also a large beautyful Satsuma brooch I could buy a bargain. It strikes me that many people actually often sell antique jewelry and are unaware of the value. At least in my area. Is this also the case in the U.S.?

Here in our country we don't have often garage sells. And if there are there is old furniture and paintings and so on. But we have a "local" version of eBay. When I started my serious collecting I sold also a very very old Micro Mosaic pendant for a good price but far under the really value. So, I've to learn also!

I just discovered that my very nice Micro Mosaic dove brooch (also here on CW) was sold at Christies in London for the amount of $3002, lucky me! But I don't want to sell I love it too much!

Hi Agram! Found this old post from you just now...
Black part is enamel, as the white parts of the turban. This motif is Venetian, was very popular at the end of the XIXth still in vogue, exist in earrings, pins, even parure!
Seeking for more pics, found these:

and for the story picked on this site:

This kind of dark seems born in the Near East, led by women to the ears. The continuous contacts of sailors with the lands of the East for their businesses have helped to introduce, even in Rijeka, the earrings from the dark brown. Maybe it's happened before in Rijeka s' settled after more or less bloody struggles, the Republic of Venice (May 1508). The Moors as those represented here, had the shape of the head of the Negro with a Muslim turban, gold and enamel, and soon conquered the entire coast of Dalmatia. Only later was applied to the crescent and the star refers to the domination of the Turks. Today, the laboratories who make them are really rare.
