I bought this Western Electric Type 85 fiddleback telephone thinking it might be oak under all that grime. Most of the Western Electric type 85's were made of walnut. There are patent dates stamped on the side and they start from 1886 to 1901. It took me several stripping and a bleaching job to bring this telephone back to it's original oak look.
great job! How did it get so nasty to begin with?
Beautiful restoration!
packrat-place, good question I believe it sat in some garage or muffler storage area for at least 50 years. It had black soot that covered the phone.

Beautiful work tom. You must have a heck of a lot of patience based on the first photo!
