Made by George Owr around 1857 for his master's granddaughter. Pane by James Castle around 1970. This piece of furniture was in my grandfather's workshop. I'm sure he meant to restore at some point. It has really neat little secret hidden drawers! Needs some work but still a beautiful piece!
I have no idea what a piece of handmade walnut furniture is worth. Does anyone have an idea? Piece is very, very heavy and seems to be solid walnut except veneer on drawers. I want to list my antiques separately for insurance purposes.
Interesting that you would say this was made for a woman-- the piece is known as a "Butler's desk".
Prices for these and most antiques have declined in recent years. One in excellent original condition will SELL for about $600- $900 (5-7 years ago, I would have said about $1200- $1500). There is damage on the veneer and front trim and the top lock surround has been replaced with a brass cover. The damage on the desk shelf is significant as it makes it non useable as a desk. I'd say about $400- $500 in current condition.
