Acid etched cameo glass bowl in two colors, matte interior, polished pontil, fire polished, signed with the star signature, which dates it to between 1904 and 1914.

Upon Emile Gallé's death in 1904 from leukemia, his widow, Henriette, along with Gallé's friend Victor Prouvé, continued the operation of the factory. Most of the pieces produced during this time were marked with a star next the the Gallé signature as a mark of mourning and respect. The use of the star was discontinued after Henriette's death in 1914, and production was stopped altogether during World War I. After the war, production resumed under Gallé's son-in-law, Paul Perdrizet, and operation continued until approximately 1935.

Several things, Marty... An established shape and decor, fire polished rim, ground and polished pontil, correct signature, smooth matte interior - I have no concerns about this one.

      Yep that looks fine
There is still alot of debate as to whether the star was only used 1904-1906 or 1904 -1914

Why does it look unfinished (i.e., the irregular orange background around the raised decor devices)?

Mike- yes, I had two conflicting sources, so I just went with circa 1905. As to the background, I think it's just a function of having a white under layer

Thanks. French art glass is a weak point in my knowledge base.

The orange background is not as obvious in the hand as it comes out in the photo; that being said, if you look at other examples the same effect is usually there but obscured by the colored glass underneath.
