A friend bought this at a tag sale. But we have not idea what it was used for. It feels like tin. Does anyone know?

Just a guess here... probably wrong... but it looks like what the fireworks guys use to put mortars in prior to launching...
My best guess is that it was made for the floral industry. Either for going out in the field to harvest fresh flowers, or to transport fresh flowers from a shop to a church , residence or funeral parlor. Time period roughly 1900 - 1950.
yep, I was a florist at one time, and could have used such a clever device. They still make "single" cans, but most florists now just use those 5 gallon plastic buckets .
Anyway, that is my guess.
I love finding stuff I can't identify, it usually loses much of it's allure when I get it figured out.
This item looks like it is galvanized to protect it from exposure to moisture. Maybe it is used outdoors. Maybe farming related?
