Last weekend I found this mortar and pestle at an estate sale. The price was so cheap I thought it was possibly a reproduction. I figured the price was less then the scrap value of brass, so I was ok either way. As you know, they reproduce brass items in India and Pakistan all the time, and even have the vintage patina look down to a science.
I took it to a friend if mine who runs estate sales and has an antique business. As it turns out, I did quite well. It is an authentic late 1800's apothecary mortar and pestle, weighing 8-1/2 pounds, is solid brass, and rings like a fine bell when tapped together. I really like the look of it, and it will look great displayed on my desk.
