I don't think it's a king on a throne. To me it looks like the Virgin Mary holding the Baby Jesus on a throne. Probably a religious medal.

I was curious so I enlarged the photo to 188% to get a better look. The adult person could be either a man or a woman, I suspect a man because he is wearing a hat with a front visor. The hair is about ear length facial features indicate he is fairly young. Besides the child he is holding a staff type object in his other hand. The child appears to be a malnourished black boy. His hair is very close cut. Also he (the child) is holding a square object in his lap. The object is not a book as the center is raised and slopes at the top. Makes me wonder if it has something to do with Christmas or gift giving. The child has a huge toothy smile on his face.

Are there any markings or hallmarks? What is it made of?

Thanks Rob, the black face must be either the finish is worn off or a shadow from the camera flash. I blew it up more and what I called a staff does look like it has an open lily blossom at the top. I can't explain the book being raised in the center but perhaps it was made that way or an effect of being enlarged. Interesting information, I went to Wiki and read their write up. Quite interesting there also.
