      Hello,
I thought I would just throw out a few comments and see what sticks.
First the piece is a cup for drinking tea. (I have to use my judgement here because you do not give the height of the cup...something to remember when asking questions). I suppose this measures around 3 or 4 inches tall.
The Japanese culture has a very long history of drinking Tea. Over the years there has developed a complex ritual , which involves the use of specialized cups, mixing bowls and other items.
Your piece was made by a master craftsman. It is "Wonky" on purpose. It is not Terra Cotta. It is high fire stoneware, as a matter of fact it was probably fired in a Fire Kiln.
Needless to say it is a special item. It is not really old, probably made in the last 60s years.
If I were you, I would get in contact with a person that can read Japanese, to read the name. Then you will know just who valuable you treasure is.
P.S. The Japanese have honors for craftsmen that produce traditional items like these. If your potter (the guy who made this) is a National Treasure...you have founds something truly valuable.
      Good Luck!

      Hi Sweets

This is hand thrown Japanese studio pottery and it should be pretty easy to find out the signature as it is quite clear. Japanese pottery is sometimes marked with just the kiln that produced it and sometimes with the kiln and artists mark. It looks very similar to those that originate form the BIZEN kilns but a nice piece to boot
