I found this reel at an auction years ago. I like it because of it's small size. It is marked AJAX on the side and the bottom is marked 60. It looks like wood on the handle but it isn't. Note also there is no guide for the line to the spool. The reel still has the old braided black line on it. I've tried to get information on this reel but have had no luck. Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

After a few hours of researching this reel it appears to be a "Raised Pillar Trout Reel #60". The #60 stamped on the bottom of the reel foot refers to the amount of line the reel will hold. So then is it 60 feet or 60 yards? The finish is supposedly to be nickel over brass, and why the name "AJAX" is stamped on the faceplate I don't know. There should be no name on the faceplate. Hope I hear from others about this reel. Thanks

I recently finished the research on this reel. It is a Pflueger Ajax, made by Enterprise Mfg. Co., Akron, Ohio, between 1900 and 1915. Quite a number of these reels were made. The 60 on the bottom of the foot refers to the capacity of line the reel holds which is 60 yards. Enterprise would put any name on a reel you wanted. That name (AJAX) is a common one, used by others in the tackle business, so it must never have been trademarked. Enterprise certainly did not trademark it. It never appeared in any Pflueger catalog either. So that's the rest of the story.............

i also have that reel and was wondering if you would like to sell?

I don't think I'd sell this reel. If I remember right I only paid $3 to $5 for it. The only thing wrong with this reel is the screw was replaced that holds the handle/crank in place. Quite often I see them for sale on eBay and sell for 20 bucks or under. Why so cheep? Tons of these reels were made. Recently I bought one off eBay with 40 stamped on the bottom of the foot, less than $20. My understanding is, if you see one marked 80, grab it if you can. They are worth more.
