I had just got out of the Army and know I wanted to start collecting Antiques as I had always collect something as a kid. The summer of 1971 I started off by going to my first yard sale where I found this Table Chair (Monks Chair) along with a small rocking chair. The asking price of this Table Chair was 15 dollars and when I added the rocking chairs price it came to 25 big ones. I no longer have the rocking chair but I have taken good care of this Monks Chair. It made of quarter sown oak and has one small draw under the seat. The joints are mostly butt joints and large brass wood screws are used in affixing the arm of the chair to the table legs. The top of the table or back of the chair is approximately 1/2 inch thick oak with oak guides to aid the top or back down and up. I have seen other monks chairs over the years but none like this one. I believe this chair was made in what is call the California Art Fair period around 1915, I think. The stain used on this monks chair is about the darkest stain I have ever seen. Any info regarding this chair or other like would be of help to me. Hardbrake

Love it, never seen anything like it!
What was the intended purpose of this type of chair/table?

From what I have learned, the purpose of this table chair was to save on space in small places. When ever it is neat and quite different, thanks for the comment, Hardbrake
