Not a very helpful answer ! How in Baking. Grooves are too deep to be useful in spreading butter in pastery Making and would be at 90 degrees if used to assist in keeping a flat bread flat during baking !!
If you 'google' vintage ribbed rolling pin you will get your answer.....:-)
Thanks for comments. I will go along with the pasta type use suggestion. My own reservation is that an extruder (Such as Potatoe ricer) is far more efficient and has been in use for a long time. Still at the back of my mind is the fine finish of a fancy starched dress collar. The ceramic construction would suggest temperature is a factor - either hot for starching or cold for cooking. I agree with TallCakes. Using a ribbed cloth cover has the same effect and is easier to clean.
