The first time I came across the Chromatics range was at a market one morning and I had the opportunity of buying a full set for $120. I didn't buy them. I've regretted it a long time now. I have been able to pick up the odd cup though to add to my collection. This is what I have now.

Amber, there is a Chicago connection here! Austro, Gulotta had links with Mexico and Portugal. This range of American design is interesting!

The range was designed by Gerald Gulotta and Jack Prince. The only reference I had to it was in the Taschen 70's book by Charlotte and Peter Fiell page 551. They mention that the range was in ten tones of gold-brown, pink-lavender or grey-beige. It was produced for the Porzellanfabrik Arzberg in West Germany at the time in 1971.
For years I had no idea who Gulotta and Prince were and believed that they were possibly German designers until today.
Gerald Gulotta designed the shapes and Jack Prince was responsible for decoration on these wares and some other pieces they worked on during the 70's!
Gerald Gulotta was American born and bred, he was born the 17th of April 1921 in Rockford, Illinois. He studied design in Chicago after the War and later worked as a designer and educator at the Pratt Institute. He was a follower of the Kostellows and took over Eva Zeisel’s ceramics class after her resignation from the institution in 1955.

The 1000 Chromatics range covers porcelain table ware, glass table ware, stainless steel cutlery and even includes the place mats!
To see the full range check pout the Brooklyn museum site here:

I'm on the hunt for Arzberg pieces. I know now that the Block versions are the same thing but I am still unravelling the full story about Gulotta and Jay Lloyd Block.
Perhaps you can help me with some more information on them?

I like these cups. They stack well for storage and have a great line. The colour combos give me hours of pleasure. This is the dinner set I want have!

      Thanks Amber and Bellin.
The glasses he designed for the set have the same profile!
They were done by Atlantis - Cristais De Alcobaca , S.A. in Portugal.

He actually designed some interesting glass for them. Unfortunately I have no any yet.
