This was found with the other wood hand drill that I also posted on here. A Plumb Bob is one of the oldest tools in the world. They are used to make sure that everything is built perfectly upright with buildings and walls. This looks very primitive and hand made as well. It is about 3 inches across and I am not able to find one like this in my research as well.

I am not so sure of the date on this as well as the other primitive item I recently posted. So any insight would be greatly appreciated. If not no biggie.

Thank you for looking my friends and we will meet again! : )

Are you sure, where is the string attachment hole? It appears to have seen a lot of use.

I am very confident it is. I was wondering the same thing though walksoftly. With use and time this part of the item seems to be missing I suppose.

It shows a lot of wear on the top & further down towards the point, also would it have enough mass not to swing being made of wood? It has the classic shape, but it also raises some questions.

Awesome find with some great info walksoftly. The link rocks. Very pertinent info related to this sort of item. You just may be right. It is possibly something other then a plumb bob.

Maybe you should place it under the secondary category title of toys & see if anyone else has some knowledge on it.

I'm pretty sure that it is a throwing top, apparently they have been around for centuries, yours is a little one.

You have me leaning this way as well walk. The only real item that leads me to believe otherwise it that it was included with a bunch of old tools. So a little more research is in order before my final conlcusion. : )

This is a great piece, but don't you think it is whipping top?
