Franz Welz glass from the 20's and 30's has been confused and misunderstood for a while. I have been looking for common techniques that Welz uses to decorate this type of cased glass. I call them "Powder Decors" because of the fine dust of glass used to create the internal decor. My best guess is a pattern of glass dust was placed on a table and a gather of glass was rolled over it to give it the design. My second (and newer) theory was the cased decor was sprinkled with powders then embossed with a mold...then reblown to expand the imprint and expose the pattern. next step was to roll the glass in crystal clear glass sand then refire. other larger glass chips and details were added in another step.

    1. Button decor (circles change to ovals when stretched)
    2. Pleated decor (notice the variation of loose or tight lines)
    3. Pleats and buttons (Both simple design elements combined)
