Can anyone put a possible year on this chest?

This piece is obviously all handmade. The names of the apparent owners of the chest are engraved ANDERAS (with N spelled backwards) on the left-hand side, and LINDHART, (same N backwards on the right.) Assembled very intricately.

Is there any way to determine what type of wood was used? Possible area it originated from?

In my opinion, you should have this personally appraised to really see how old it is. Although there are several experts here who know trunks and chests, something that's entirely handcrafted could be anywhere from maybe two hundred years old, to fairly recently. (Correct me if I'm wrong, experts!)

Sorry, can't help you. If it were me, I'd start with a local historical society, and ask if they have an antiques expert.

I truly believe this is a very unique and old piece that deserves a legit appraisal

I would concur -- it is hard to get a good feel for a unique piece such as yours by pictures alone. Have fun in the process!
