When finding this penny in the collection I was astonished we had anything this old. I read the date to my dad and we both looked at each other with surprise and excitement.

I asked my dad why there was a whole on the top and he said it was because people used to wear them as fashion jewelry. It is ashame that they did because they probably could have had a "pretty penny" for it. (No pun intended)

Your dad is right. I have a necklace made up of late 1800 and early 1900 pennys.

It looks more like it had an old hand made nail driven through it.They used to nail them up for luck...like they did with horseshoes.

I'm not a real expert on pennies like that. But I know that what your dad told you is true.
