QUEZAL Art Glass vase elaborately decorated with platinum pulled hooked feathers, gold iridescent zig-zag over gold iridescent feathers and gold iridescent draped decorations on a green iridescent optic ribbed over opal body with a gold iridescent interior.
Engraved on a concave polished pontil: QUEZAL E 286
JJZ.......I have noticed your pieces have letters and number with the QUEZAL signature. I know this means they are early pieces. Have you figured out the number system yet ?
I have always felt that they were copying the Tiffany system ???
FWF, that would be a fun discussion at your next dinner party, a couple bottles of wine later we might get to the bottom of it....the numbering system was used from about 1903 through 1919 and I have always liked the earlier examples over the later ones. This is the era when QUEZAL ART GLASS AND DECORATING COMPANY was at their height of creative production. I'm sure that the numbering system was influenced by Tiffany Studios....
Hope I'm not out of line; but is this the same vase shown in Miller's 2010-2011 HANDBOOK (p564)? If not the photo looks identical! Is it 7.25" tall by any chance? I think this is an outstanding example, and I have been looking for its' twin. Maybe you already found it! It would be nice to think there is more than one like this out there, but my gut says "not a chance!" Great vase, and a great photo too. Thanks!
dasullywon, comments are never out of line and I welcome them, I do not have the Miller's 2010-2011 Handbook, however, my example is 7-1/4" tall and it was acquired through the RAGO Craftsman Auction in October 2007 and this is their catalog photo. If your above mentioned example is signed and numbered QUEZAL E 286 then it is in fact the same referenced example. I'm getting closer to taking studio photos of my entire collection for publication but I'm not their yet. The Quezal early examples are sometimes close in resemblance but never exact matches or identical, hence, the signature and number with a prefix letter is a key giveaway. The "E" prefixes are some of my favorites. I hope this helps and I welcome any additional comments. Thanks.
Yes, the book has the same E 286 so it is the same, and that vase did come from the Rago connection I'm sure. You obviously have the best and most comprehensive Quezal collection I have ever seen. I will share photos of my JIP pulled-feather example that is my best, but that also requires picking up the camera and doing it. Funny thing how pictures don't take themselves!
You have an amazing collection!
sarahoff, Thank you for your favorable comment.
