Here Twiggy, Twiggy, Twiggy…! I wish collecting corkscrews was that easy!
This piece is an English corkscrew by George Twigg. It is Patent No. 2,851 registered on October 10, 1867.
This type is referred to as a “mechanical corkscrew”.
Fun Fact! George Twigg was the first forgien non-resident person to be granted a US Patent for a corkscrew! Congrats George!
To use such a sophisticated device, simply turn the wooden handle to screw the corkscrew into the cork. Don’t worry about chipping the mouth of the bottle, as there is a rubber fitting inside the lip of the barrel. Once the corkscrew is in, begin the extraction process by turning the side handle. No pulling here!
George Twigg manufactured several variations. I’ve included a couple other pictures.
I have yet to find one of these to add to my collection. If you’ve got one, let me know. I’m sure we can work out a deal!
Cheers
