This is probably my absolute favorite piece of porcelain. Funny, considering I prefer blue glass and china and tend to stay away from anything red. But the feel of this bowl, the vivid and textural painting and overall look of it is just gorgeous. Here's what I do know. The mark is a green leaf with the words hand painted and Nippon. I found that this mark was used between 1878 and 1884 by Morimura in Tokyo. The Morimura brothers operated a china decorating facility of their own, but not a pottery. They bought porcelain blanks for contract decorating and later would begin producing their own in Noritake which would later become the Noritake Company in 1911. There is not a chip or ding in it anywhere and has very little wear on the gold.
What I don't know is if this bowl design had a particular use or if it was only decorative. I'd also love to know if the pattern had a name. If you should happen to have seen this somewhere before and know anything more about it, I'd be thrilled to hear from you. Thanks for looking.
edit: I have a much better zoom of the mark if you need that, but I really wanted the form seen.
