Hello all
Well, I love finding chinese furniture. I was at an estate sale and found a pair of these chairs. I know Chinese woods as well the dating of each period. This one of a pair is made of zitan, very heavy wood. The chair dates from the early 19th century. The color you can see is a very dark redish, purple to it. the workmenship is very fine and clean.
I have been collecting for 38 years. I hope this chair pleases your eye as it does mine. Oh, to restore the depth of the color, I let the chairs sit in the sun for four hours, then apply a warm bee's wax to it through out. Then set it in the shade to cool, then rub until it comes up a silky shine.
This proccess took four days for each chair.
I posted more pictures before wax treatment. closer look at the grain and color.

I wish you would post more pictures please. This is an fantastic find you have here.
I agree this is zitan. I hope you know this may be 18th century and imperial!
Congradulation on this find.
Thank you for posting more photos. I can see the grain of the wood and it is the rare zitan wood. Very nice. Most of the zitan wood was imperial use. During the end of the Qing dynast the wood was use by very rich merchants. I feel your chairs date to the late 18th century due to the style of the time. Quite a find.
thank you for the comment TongWu. I will look into the info you provided and hope that your right. There are other items from the estate I did buy similar and will post them some day. thank you
awesome chairs!
