The first thing that comes to my mind when I look at this is the Three Graces. They are often pictured with flowers and sometimes pine cones, which I think might be on your piece. Just a guess, but when I first saw this, that's what I thought it was. It almost looks like it could be travertine from the pictures.

thanks for your comment chinablue. it's very heavy rock. i'm not sure how to tell whether something is travertine or not, but i'll look it up.

I agree, scandinavian_pieces. I love things like this and use them outdoors in my gardens.

i did a little research on this a couple months ago and i think that it is from the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Expo in San Francisco. it looks a lot like the work of one of the female sculptors who worked there. i sure wish i could find out more. i've got to take some better photos of it. these ones are distorted because i didn't take them from level center.

thank you mikkochristmas11. i think i've finally figured out who made this. i believe it was carved by a very famous woman carver - Evelyn Beatrice Longman [Batchelder]. She was the only apprentice to Daniel Chester French. She did other friezes which have very similar faces and especially fabric - including fabric which encircles the heads. i'd love to find out for sure or get an official attribution. exciting!!

Great news, ho2cultcha!!! I do hope that you get this professionally appraised, however - even if you come to be personally certain of the artist's identity. At the very least, you'd want to insure it. Do you think it's safe to keep it outside? I mean with the variations in temperatures and the weather. I think it's magnificent!!, and if it were mine, I'd keep it inside and baby it. Love, love this one!!! : )

thanks mikkochristmas11. no, i don't think it's particularly safe outside, although it barely gets to an occasional frost here, so i don't think weather is the issue. but there are other reasons why it's not so safe. but it weighs around 400 lbs and i just can't see me dragging it from corner to corner in my 500 sq ft house, nor climbing over it, nor stubbing my toes on it. so outside it remains! i agree though that i do need to get it professionally appraised and insure it. i think it's worth about 5g give or take 1g, but i'd like to get that in writing from a professional appraisor.

i just added some better photos of the entire bas-relief. i'd like to hear other's opinions if you have one. thanks!
