The first patent for a corkscrew was granted to Rev. Samuel Henshall on August 24,1975 in England. Thank you Sammy!

His patent implemented a button or disc that was placed between the shank and the helix. This button had a slight curve to it. This served two purposes. First, it prevented the helix from going further into the cork and second it offered extra gripping power to help break the seal. Ingenious!

It’s marked on the top of the button “OBSTANDO PROMOVES, SOHO PATENT” (which means “by standing firm one makes advancement”)

Since then there have been many different styles and variations of the “Henshall Button”. Why? Because it works.

I’m still looking for one to add to my collection.

    Cheers
