THULE is one of the ranges designed for Lütken inside the AKVA range (although as half of them, can also be found in the SMOKE grey version).
THULE was the uncertain name that was used in ancient times to designate Scandinavia, Iceland or Greenland... In Lütken's work (until 1960) isn't rare to find names of places related to Danish/Scandinavian history: GRØNLAND (Greenland), UMANAK is a mountain in Greenland, DISKO is an island not far from the Uummannaq mountain, LABRADOR was the place where Leif Ericson was supposed to have discovered America in the 11th Century, SELANDIA is the Latin name for the Danish island of Sjælland, FIONIA or Fyn is the second or third biggest island in Denmark, YORK, or Jorvik, was the capital of the Viking territory in northern England in the 9th Century...
In this range Lütken plays with the conic shape and slanted edges, as well as the usual thick bases.
That big Akva bowl was my first piece of Per's work bought in 1985. I still have it and another smaller. It is wonderful to see them all together! Thanks again for sharing these great pieces of Holmegaard.
Thanks Vet!!! It's a pleasure (and a relief) realizing that someone else (out of Denmark) shares my love for Per Lütken's work.
This icy blue color is fantastic. It seems to me that Holmegaard is gaining in popularity amongst collectors here in the States. I see and hear about it more than I ever have. I admit that I am just ramping up my educational myself, but I bet you will see it get hot in the near future.
Please tell them to hold it for a couple of years so I can get the remaining Holmegaard pieces Im' seeking for a decent price!!! It would be awful tosee they become as expensive as Lötz glass!!!
