I love this piece, but I'm not at all sure who made it, save that I'd guess it's Bohemian. It does not look quite like anything else I have seen so far - but as you all know, I've not seen a lot!
It is a very thin layer of amethyst glass, cased in a thicker clear layer to which the oilspot decoration has been added. The oil spot colours are beautiful, almost pastel bluey, greeny, yellow with a soft but strong iridescence over all.
The mount is quite nicely cast and the "tie" is a hoop fastening rather than a simple twist. The metal was gilded, like ormolu, but that has mostly worn off. Plenty of subtle age-related wear to the base.
I think that the closest thing I have seen is a bowl described as multi-coloured oil spot on www.kralik-glass.com, but the site states that all known examples of that decor have an opalescent interior. This does not. The colours look a little like some of the Kralik or Rindskopf corrugated pieces, so far as I can tell, but it's far from a match.
So - help please! I'm sure I must have missed something obvious ...
And for those interested - the background clematis is a florida sieboldii. That at least I do know!

Thank you Scandi! One can never have too many - glass, clematis, all the same. Glass takes up less space ...

Hey LLL not cheeky at all to ask me to take a look but I have to say I don't know. Kraliky-rindskophish is about the best I'd do too. I don't have much of an interest in this particular type of bohemian glass so I am kind of useless to ask. it is a neat one though. :)

Thanks Greatsnowyowl, always worth a try! I hoped it might ring a bell with you, but hey, there we are. I just keep adding to that "don't know, might be ..." section of the collection!

An answer usually comes along if you wait long enough. :)

I just need to live long enough! How long have you been waiting for the answer on that great swan vase? I might make 20 years, any longer, who know? ;)
    11. Greatsnowyowl Greatsnowyowl, 12 years ago
that one is pretty obscure, this not quite so much. :) that is definitely my longest lived mystery. (and deep down, I really think it is catalina) with glass I've had a lot of answers over a shorter period of years :) Czech glass is really young into it's proper research so answers are popping up all the time.

All very true - and then there are the answers you think are the last word which turn out not to be. It's what keeps life interesting! I just hope it survives long enough to get an answer - small boys are not as careful as cats, I suspect, although just as interested. I don't know whether to be pleased they're interested, or terrified!

That's great, we need new collectors to be born or we won't have anyone to sell our crap to when we get old and need to offload it! :)
    14. Londonloetzlearner Londonloetzlearner, 12 years ago
How very true! Although as they are 3 and 5 I would like them to wait til I'm not bankrolling them!

lol, I can see that. I recommend earth quake putty..

Great idea! Not usually essential kit in London ...

Eh if you have kids or cats it should be. they're more likely than an actual earthquake ANYWHERE. For a year or so my maine coon went thru a phase of wanting to sit on shelves with the glass... nothing even looked like it was thinking of falling over as she weaved thru it. (the answer to getting her to stop it was to pack the shelves tighter with stuff) She was doing it so I'd pay more attention to her I think.

Boys and cats - very similar. And if it's not attention seeking, it's button pushing! I will tell my husband you recommend packing the shelves tighter. He will be thrilled. Not. My 3 year old looked at a piece today and said "it's lovely Mummy. Can I take it to show Daddy? He will hate it, won't he?" Now, it's not that bad, but there is a certain antipathy - out of the mouths of babes ...

      Thank you, Obscurities!
I really love this one - the mount is very nice and crisply cast, even though the gilding is rubbed to non-existent, and the colours are just amazing. Very hard to capture in a photo.

Your vase is by Josef Rindskopf
    23. Londonloetzlearner Londonloetzlearner, 12 years ago
Thank you, John. Funnily enough, I was coming to that conclusion myself just today, so it's nice to have my instinct confirmed by an expert. You might recognise another of my posts ...

Hey everyone, I just came across this old post looking for clues regarding my latest purchase which is exactly the same vase pictured here (mine is lacking the pretty mount though)! I too suspect it's Joseph Rindskopf. It's very much like this one which is also clear glass with a layer of purple glass and a decor a la Papillon :

Beautiful clematis by the way, I bet it would look fabulous in the vase!
