Hi everyone! I'm wondering if anyone has information on these trivets / hot pads? It's woven and made of milk glass (opaque glass) drum (or barrel) beads. This one is rather large at 13.5 x 8.25 inches. Were they kits? When were they popular? Do tey have a specific name? Not many examples on the net - and virtually no info! Thanks for your help!
By the way - I think this is an elk. I know he is male because of his antlers - but what is the one cream bead doing on his inner thigh? I saw two other animal examples - just a single animal - not as elaborate as this and they had one errant bead, too. But it was in the middle of the field background. I also found one with folk art abstract image.
I think they are Kits. My Mom had some & put them out on the table every Xmas, many moons ago.....

I think this is a raindeer/caribou. I have a feeling this is indian beadwork (north america/Alaska). The raindeer can have some white in the back and inside upperpart of leg but I think the odd white bead is there to create depth. Both male and female raindeers have antlers.
The raindeer is a popular figure in several parts of scandinavia and turns up in coat of arms for several cities. It is also very present in the art of the Sami people here. But this type of beadwork is something I asociate with american indian art and I have red about caribou as part of native american mythology. That's why I think I might be right....
