For 5 years, I have search for just the right Dough Bowl. They were either cracked or too expensive. At the Lil' Calypso Festival at Lake Martin, I found this old, hand-hewn, gorgeous one! I must say that being outside, my perspective must have been off because it is really big sitting on the counter! Approx 20 wide, 9 inches tall and a whopping 46 inches long! My South Carolina friend who I met on here through their similar Dough Bowl told me that theirs, which is extremely similar, is a trencher style dough bowl and looks like the European style (some say Holland, Belgium, or France). This size normally had 3 women working it at the same time - 2 women on the same side, working the ends and another woman on the other side in the middle, rocking it back and forth while the two were making the dough. I've done the "Feed-N-Wax" first step, so there are before and after pictures. Any guidance and advice is welcome.
Very nice! I haven't decided yet on whether to wax mine or not. I like the looks of it, but I also like the natural wood look that mine currently has as well. I've seen a few on eBay that look similar to this. Some say they're French, others say they're from Belgium, and others say they're from Holland. It seems the common denominator is that they're from somewhere in Europe.
P.S. - I'm in South Carolina. :)
Fixed the "North" to "South" - thanks! I waxed it because I did not want it to crack - there were two places that appeared to have the beginning of a possible split. Guess I probably could have found something to merely "feed" - mom suggested olive oil.
Just curious (and if you don't mind saying), how much did you pay for it?
give me your email address and I'll do so privately.
I'd rather not post my email address here. Don't want to have it picked up and then get bombarded with spam. That's ok. I was just wondering which of us got the better deal. :)
Is there a way to private message on here?
That's what I was wondering too, but I don't see any way of doing it.
That is very nice, & it is big, you could make a lot of bread in that in a day.
A suggestion set up a new email account , put it up momentarily so that you can make contact then immediately take it down. That is what I do & other's have done to protect there main email account.
I put some Howard Feed n Wax on mine for the first time today. Makes it look much better by highlighting the grain of the wood.
