Very interesting knife. Would like to see the blade more clearly.

This is a really interesting piece! Never seen anything like it before. Is it possible for you to take a picture or two in natural daylight, like outside but out of direct sun so that the design on the sheath and the writing on the blade can be seen better?? This is something that I'm sure you want to know more about and that might help people get some information for you. Are the green and red 'stones' like glass or more like jade? Hopefully you'll get some answers. I know I'd want to know more about it if it were mine.

thanks guys. the red and green things look to be glass but I'm not sure. you can see through them into the wood they are very smooth

Just had a few questions that could help in ID'ing this piece. Is there anyway you can find out when/where your grandfather was in the service? Perhaps going by his age if nothing more? That would be a GREAT help. Also, how large is this piece? Is it heavy or light for it's size? Just from the new pictures (which are GREAT btw) this looks like something that may be handcrafted, possibly silver? clad, with some type of cabochon cut stones.
I'm not that familiar with knives, but merely from the designs on the sheath I'm thinking it's rather like something from the Ottoman Empire, or perhaps East Asian in origin. The engraving on the blade doesn't really look Arabic to me, but I certainly don't know that much about that either. The picture on the sheath/scabbard looks very Oriental to me and the floral design like a lotus/chrysanthemum combination. REALLY interesting to look at. Can't wait until someone comes by that knows something about this!

The knife is similar to souvenir knives that are sold in souks throughout the middle east.

He was on a destroyer in the philipian sea in 1944 and was sank by a typhoon and a plane that had hit it and started a fire.

sorry hit the send button by mistake.. but thats a great dagger you have there . they are rare . i own one and did some research years ago. and from memory its definately a genuine antique from the middle east yours could be arabic going on the inscription. they are called a special name but that escapes me at the moment. even if only made from a base metal worth $350 . of course higher if testd for silver and real gems,,,HOPE this helps Laura
