There is writing on the back of the base, but I can't read it. Perhaps the last word is Wathu or Malhu?? The word after that is Sept (september?) She is holding a torch. This is a rather large and heavy lamp, nearly 30" from the base to the torch.
My daughter's roommate was tossing the lamp!
If you post a photo of the writing even though only a small part might be decipherable someone here might sill recognize it and be able to help you, the last word wouldn't be 'Milo' would it?....:-)
Ok, photo added - i tried 6x, but it's just hard to get, half the word is under her foot. It appears to be three words, blank, then Malhu??? Mathu? then sept. I tried googling and got nothing.
I tried and googled different versions of what you thought it may be, I too came up with nothing, I was hoping it was a 'Milo' for you but looking at it may not be. That's a great photo I'm sure it will be recognized by someone, fingers crossed.......:-)
The name is Mathurin Moreau. He was a French sculptor (1822-1912) Your can see an original of this sculpture at:
http://www.liveauctioneers.com/sothebys/item/257162 it sold for $4,800. Unfortunately, yours is a plaster casting. The "65" is probably an inventory number or for 1965.
Still, I think you did good rescuing it. On the decorative market, I think it is worth about $100-150. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Thank you so much Johann! I figured it wasn't too valuable, or the woman wouldn't have been tossing it. It is such a pleasure though to look at, and adds beauty to my living room.
