These are all from a pile of old newspapers from germany - 1992. i usually don't have a clue as to what the articles are talking about as i don't speak/understand any german at all, but the illustrations are such a high quality and they do speak volumes on their own.
thanks mustangtony. i had no idea that extensions were first accessories for horses! Marietta - my grandmother's name and a real beauty too. i'd love to know what it says in the one you are unable to read.
I've seen the second image before somewhere & I love that last image, thanks for sharing with us.
The long haired horse

thanks walksoftly. great detective work!
Mustangtony - it probably refers to a pygmy tribe in the Congo.
when i get around to it, i'll post photos of these images framed and hung on my wall.
The third image could simply be a "little person" dwarf, of any African tribe along Stanley's travel route.
Is it just me or does she look like Oprah?
i think it's just you walksoftly.
To me they look more like drawings ? Not photographs . The dwarf woman for sure does . If you look at hands ? I don't know but I am throwing out my 2 cents and say they are the artists interpretation of what he saw as he traveled ?
Good one Walksoft I see Oprah in her also :-)
i think that they're etchings made from photographs. i see them a lot in harper's weekly at that time. they sure are beautiful quality though - way more of a statement than the photos in today's daily papers.
I so agree ho2cultcha ! beautifully done . I love the old newspapers like Harpers . They have great etchings and lots of history in them . Thanks for sharing these :-)
thanks manikin. i do too! i think that harper's weekly's are a real treasure and still a bargain. someday soon, they are going to be very scarce and valuable, i think. i have several of the big annual volumes, and i spend a lot of time reading through them and taking photos of their graphics and interesting things. i've got a few annual volumes of foreign newspapers as well and find them equally fascinating.
