I would like to share with you two beautiful crystal celery vase that I was very! lucky enough to be given a few years ago. I believe that they are from around 1840.They have pride of place on my dinning table and I admire them every day.
Celery was once considered a luxury so much so that 'vases' and containers were especially designed to hold them. Celery vases were popular from the early of the 19th to the early 20th centuary.
They celery vases would be placed and were a fixture on the table. They would hold the fresh celery in water to keep the celery crisp so people could snack on the celery throughout the day.
By the late 1800s celery was easier to grow and became less rare.

Magnificent celery vases! I have enjoyed many a 'celery vase', but these are two of the most beautiful. Thank you for the great photos, and for the wonderful text. I knew that celery was a delicacy during this period, but I didn't know that people kept the vases filled throughout the day to enable snacking during the day! Wonderful. miKKo

I never heard of a celery vase either (country boy here) but I love them because I used to get hot fudge sundae in ones that looked like this when I was a kid.

Celery vases continued to be made well after 1900. They were a staple item in lines of glassware, and are shown in catalogs of the various glass manufacturers into the teens and even 1920s. Imperial included them in some of their lines in the 1930s.
