I picked this up a an estate sale recently, on the 2nd day of the sale! I'd seen a picture of it and knew it was a '50s model but figured I'd let somebody else get it. A buddy called me Sunday afternoon and said it was still there and that prices were about to be half off. Needless to say, I got over there pretty quick and that's when I noticed it had a skip-tooth, sweetheart crank! I just about flipped! I couldn't believe no one else grabbed it (I live in Houston and there are a lot of vintage bike guys around). Anyway, it looks like the only non-original part are the grips.
The story goes that the original owner received the bike as an award for selling the most newspapers on his route back in the day.
I've updated this to show the 'after' version, can you spot the differences?
I went through all the bearings, added new tires and tubes along with the Persons siren and Schwinn grips. I've already put about 50 miles on it in the last couple of weeks, rides like new, I love it!!
Nice bike & nice finding it that way! I also like the story that goes with it's history.
