This is my latest find. I found this treasure next to my dad's neighbor's garbage! And it was love at first site. I asked her if I could have it and she said of course, she is downsizing and this chest was the one that was in the worst shape. The only I.formation she told me about the trunk was she painted it pink and its about a hundred years old. I fell in love with this trunk, the choppy pink paint, the old fabric inside, and there is a picture of a bird. I would appreciate if anyone more well versed in this area to pass on any info and I'm not willing to sell this beauty that stole my heart, but am curious what it is worth for insurance purposes. The insurance company doesn't appreciate me saying "it's priceless", even if it is true. Thank you!
I can fully appreciate your attraction to this old beauty. It is a nice example of an early dome top trunk -- looks to be about 1860 to 1870. Part of that time frame guess goes to the latch, which is found on trunks of that era. A picture of the handles and interior would help a little in assessing date. In its current condition the value is not high, even for its age -- you should be able to find similar examples in your area to get an idea. There is beautiful wood waiting to be released underneath should you choose to refinish it. However the "shabby chic" pink effect does have its merit. Nice find!
I added more pics, which from my phone is difficult due to image numbers & no thumbnails. I appreciate the insight. My dad's hobby is woodworking & he took a look at it the night before and thought about lining it with cedar and refinishing the trunk. I love the shabby chic look, therefore the pink chipped paint is what gives it character to me. The inside has some damage, which can be repaired, however, it seems to also add to the charm. I have browsed through websites selling shabby chic furniture and antique stores in my area and it seems if I went that path, the price they would want easily $100. This was a charming find for free and I will treasure it for the rest of my life or the trunks life!
