I found the beautiful work of art at an estate sale and know nothing about it. I took it to a gallery and they had no clue. The only thing they said was it looked like an original watercolor and the frame and glass are very old as well. There is a signature at the bottom of the bonnet with the name George with possibly the letter O inside the G for a first initial? Not sure if that's what it is meant to be or not. There also appears to be a 13 after the signature, so maybe for 1913? Any help would be great, there are a ton of artists with the name George.

It looks as if there is something that is or was written above the signature of George. Can you tell anything about it with a loupe? It almost looks like another name, possibly starting with a "B" or a "D" and what looks like a number after it. Is this a print? If so, is there anything about a copyright or where it was printed?? Also, what size is this piece?

It looks like a watercolor from the pictures, but it's SO hard to tell without actually seeing it, isn't it!? And I'm wondering if George is the first or last name. Hmmm.. I love a mystery!

Ok, I'm a bit brain dead today.. I see you posted it was a watercolor now. Forgive my oversight! I think it's time for my nap. *S*

No worries, I appreciate all the help I can get on this one. The size is 20in x 10in. There is no other writting anywhere else front or back, just the George and the '13. It does look like something else was written above the George but it's so hard to tell and looks like it was rubbed away.

I'm back from my nap now.. no, seriously... I am. When you get to be a certain age.. well, anyway..
You say you got this at an estate sale. Do you know the name of the person/family for which the sale was conducted? Was it from an estate in the US or another country? If you could get any personal information about the estate, either from the seller or from a brochure, etc you could possibly contact them (or have the seller contact them on your behalf) and ask if they knew if it was a family portrait or was it something that had been purchased. I know that around my area, often times family members will offer information about pieces just to keep their family/loved ones from being forgotten. Sometimes if the sale is local, a neighbor can supply a lot of information about how long they remember it being in someones home, or they heard someone mention it was 'great aunt gert' or some such. Just a thought which you may well have already come up with and explored.
I'm like you, I want to know about things, even things such as who the lady in your painting might be. For what it's worth, I WILL be on the lookout for something about this painting. Best of luck in your hunt!

Thank you much! Unfourtunatly the people I bought this from were no help. He didn't even know the painting exsisted until he was going through the estate to set up the sale and none of the family knew anything about it either.

That's too bad! I was hoping you might at least get some information on where it might have been done. It could well have been a local artist that could help narrow your search. Don't give up.. sometimes information about things like this will just fall in your lap when you least expect it. Hopefully someone on here will know who George O. or O. George was!
