My mom had these in her basement for a really long time. I have no idea where they came from. I'm assuming they are canisters. Does anyone know if they might have a more specific use or how old they might be?
I love these! But then, of course I would. :-) Can't tell you for certain how old they are, but they wouldn't be older than 1891 because of the McKinley Tariff. (some German marked items date a bit differently) Until 1921, they would have been marked "Nippon". So from that, they are at least 91 years old. I honestly haven't seen any exactly like this before. Most of the canisters I've seen are round. There were stacking/nesting ones made at different times by different makers. They could be used as serving pieces, like a covered bowl but I doubt that was their original purpose because they lack handles or an edge by which to hold them. So, I'm with you, I'm going with canisters. From the picture its hard to tell if the knob/handle of the lid is recessed enough to allow these to stack, but I'm thinking it does. Lovely pieces! Thanks for showing them.
*smacking my forehead* I know better than to post anything before I've had my coffee! I meant to say they are at most 91 years old, not at "least" 91 years old. Sorry 'bout that! :-}
Chinablue - thanks so much. Your comments were very helpful (and I read them after I had my coffee!). Is this pattern "blue willow"?
Oh - and they do nest nicely inside each other.
Glad I could help. And yes, they are Blue Willow. Willow comes in several different colors, actually but the blue is the one that most familiar. If you care to know more about it, you can check out this link on it's history/story:

Chinablue - thanks again. I'm posting another piece that you may be able to help me with.
