1916 Banjo self instruction manual/with original pick

Purchased at a yard sale, a stack of magazines...After getting home, the pick fell from the book, which made me examine the book further. seems to be in remarkable shape, and from what I understand, a little bit scarce. The pick itself looks original, and I do not think it has seen the light of day(book), in a very long time. The price was $2.00 for the whole stack... Fourth picture is pic under 10x loop, I am told if the pick is tortoise shell, it could be rare, does anyone know how to tell if it is tortoise shell.
